Professor Zhou Yao, who distinguishes himself by combining teaching with scientific research, has created China's first Museum of Insects and Insects Research Institute.important bearing on national economic and social development, such as life science, information technology, environmental science and bioengineering. A number of schools have turned leading disciplines, pillar disciplines and related disciplines into discipline groups, thereby strengthening their ability to make research breakthroughs. With strengthened ability, they have made a great number of findings that have yielded both social and economic results.
        Courses offered by schools are now more closely related to social and economic development. And this has enabled institutions of higher learning to serve the country's social and economic development better.
        At the end of the 20th century, the Ministry of Education launched a New Century Higher Education Reform Program, according to which, a comprehensive reform of higher education in the fields of talent training mode, the content of courses, course system and teaching methods will be studied
  and implemented. The program aims to train more people with professional expertise who have an innovative and enterprising spirit and a strong ability to solve practical problems.
        As for the management of teaching, most universities and colleges have adopted "Credit hour system" or "Elastic Credit Hour System" for many years. However, before the adoption of this new system, the students only could get their graduation certificate on the last day of the fourth year, even though they had finished all credit hours in advance. In its teaching reform, Peking University employs multi-teaching models to cultivate the undergraduates and encourages the students to develop through multi channels. One of its measures is the actualization of "Credit Hour System", which means as long as the student finishes all required credit hours can he/she graduate in advance. Students can study for a second bachelor degree or for further education. The multi talent cultivating models also include that the student can participate in social practice or start his/her own business after graduation while his/her file can be kept in the university. The development plan of undergraduate education of Peking University is to carry out common knowledge education for freshmen and sophomores, to carry out "wide aperture" education for junior and senior students, and to gradually realize the free course selection credit hour system under the guidance of teaching plans and instructors.
